It’s that time of year again, Halloween or as I like to call it, sugar shock time. I love a good candy bar as much as the next person but have come to dislike the way I feel after eating the typical Halloween treats. I’ve had clients and friends ask me for some healthier options that would help them control their sweet tooth around all of the tempting candies of the season without derailing their health goals and here is what I have come up with, I hope you enjoy!
1- Raw Chocolate vs. a Hersheys bar
2- Almond Butter and grain sweetened Chocolate Chip Apple vs. a Carmel Apple
3-Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Putter Cups vs. Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
4-Toasted Pumpkin Seeds vs. Potato Chips
5- Dates stuffed with cashew and coconut and drizzled with honey vs. chocolate covered cherries
I combine chocolate and nuts or nut butters which are high in healthy fats and protein to help prevent a blood sugar spike. Grain sweetened dark chocolate chips are a nice addition to your baking arsenal as they have no refined sweeteners and can be found at most health food stores. I also pick chocolate with at least 70% cacao content so that there is less sugar, more antioxidants, and more overall health benefits. The pumpkin seeds are both delicious and nutritious, they are high in calcium and boost your serotonin, the feel good hormone.
