Now that the weather is finally nice in NYC I’ve been on quite the smoothie kick. I’m now less than 3 weeks away from my wedding so subbing in a smoothie for breakfast or dinner has been helping me stay on track through all the busyness and events. I especially love a green smoothie packed with healthy fats and protein after my morning workout. You can actually see me in all of my post workout sweaty goodness above!
This smoothie was inspired by a recent trip to Juice Generation. I love their juices and was in the mood for something sweet and satisfying so I ordered the Joyful Almond. It had almond butter, cacao nibs, banana and almond milk. Check it out here. It was so good, so, so, so good. The one modification I made was no agave, I just didn’t need it, it was sweet enough. I knew I had to try to make my own version, even healthier but just as delicious at home. Here is what I came up with!
Chocolate Almond Goodness:
- 2 handfuls of greens (either spinach or kale)
- 1/2 cup almond or hemp milk, unsweetened vanilla flavor, organic if you can
- 1/2 scoop protein powder
- 1 heaping teaspoon raw almond butter
- 1 piece raw chocolate (1/4 ounce)
- 2/3 banana
Combine all ingredients in a vitamix, blend on high until smooth and drink up!
The protein powder I use is Raw Meal by Garden of Life. I love it because it’s vegan, raw, gluten free and all of the ingredients are awesome. I see it at my favorite juice bars and I feel great after I drink my smoothie with it. I am someone who needs healthy fat and protein in the morning or else I’ll be ravenous by lunch but once I found this healthy protein powder it helped make my smoothies more of a meal. The raw chocolate I enjoy is high in cacao content and will give you tons of superfood energy! My favorite and the one I used for this smoothie is Raw Chocolate Love NYC. You really only need 1/4 of the bar as it’s sweet and will add enough flavor. You can see all of the options for flavors on their site and a also find where to buy. If you are using another kind, think of it as needing about a half inch by inch piece or about a quarter ounce.
Enjoy! Let me know what you think!
